When I was 11 years old, my family experienced a very painful event. My mom had an accident. She was knocked down by a speeding car in the middle of the road and in my dad’s presence. He saw the car speeding towards my mom’s direction, and within a second, my mom flew off a few meters high into the sky and dropped to the ground.
It was a time of desperation and devastation to our family. I have five other siblings, ages between 7 to 18. We were young and we needed our mom. I locked myself in a room, devastated by the thought that I may not see my mom anymore. I pleaded and prayed to God on my knees, and with a painful heart, I cried out to God, “Please save my mommy and return her to us. I promise I’ll be good and faithful to You all the days of my life, and You can even shorten my life for my mommy to live on. I want my mom.”
By the way, what can an 11-year-old trade-off besides life and promise to be good? Before that, I was not diligent in my studies, nor did I care about my future. I only know God as our family God. He is the only God I know and I can always pray to Him.
I always cling to His promise in the Bible, “Ask and it will be given to you, seek and you will find, knock and the door will be open to you.” (Matthew 7:7). God listened to a poor child crying earnestly before Him for her mom. My mom survived! This was indeed a miracle and only possible in God’s hand.
I cannot recall how long my mom stayed in the hospital, how we endured without my mom taking care of our daily needs, and how long she was paralyzed before she could finally walk again. But I remember I was like a changed person overnight. I started to be serious and study diligently, waking up as early as 5 am in the morning to read the Bible and pray every day.
God is good and faithful. Not only did my mom survive, but I also had one and a half years to prepare for my primary six examinations. I improved from failing most of the subjects to attaining good results and continuing to excel in my studies. All these were only possible when we truly seek Him first and pray for His help.
And since I promised God that I would be good and faithful to Him all the days of my life for my mum, I must keep this promise. I thank God for this awakening experience, for Him answering my prayer and guiding me since then, allowing me to rely on Him and walk faithfully for Him.
